Good afternoon Ray Warrior Families!
I am so excited to announce two new after school programs for our 4th-8th grade students! The first one is an after school sports program called "Focus on Fitness" that is available to both in-person and remote students. The in-person students have the option of meeting from 7:30 AM - 8:30 AM on Monday and Tuesdays before school, or from 3:45 PM - 4:45 PM after school on Mondays and Tuesdays. The remote students have the option of meeting from 3:45 PM - 4:45 PM on Thursdays and Fridays after school. This program will involve stretching, cardio, contactless games, and running. Below is the excerpt from Coach McNaughton, who very kindly organized this for our 5th - 8th grade students. "We are excited to offer the CPS SCORE! Focus on Fitness program for 5th–8th grade students from April 26–May 28, 2021 at Ray. Focus on Fitness is a fun physical fitness program open to students who are learning in-person and at-home this spring. Participating students will attend the program for an hour after school twice a week. The program will focus on running, strength and conditioning, and whatever sports skills and games we are able to play. The entire program will be OUTSIDE ONLY, and is only for students in grades 5-8. IN PERSON STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE ONLY 1 TIME MONDAY AND TUESDAY 7:30AM-8:30AM OR MONDAY AND TUESDAY 3:45PM-4:45PM FULLY REMOTE STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE ONLY 1 TIME THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 7:30-8:30AM OR THURSDAY AND FRIDAY 3:45-4:45PM Health and Safety Protocols To protect the health of our students and staff, all CPS elementary sports programs will adhere to public health and safety protocols, as described in the Elementary SCORE! Sports Guidelines, and the Focus on Fitness Guidelines, which have been approved by CPS and City of Chicago Health Officials. All Focus on Fitness activities will be conducted on school grounds, and in-person and virtual learners will be placed in separate, fixed pods. Individual pods will be restricted to 20 people or less (a maximum of 19 students and one coach). Once the pods are fixed, no new students may be added. If a student drops out of the program for any reason, the pod will be reduced by that number. Prior to each Focus on Fitness session, parents must complete the CPS Health Screener for their student in order for them to be allowed at practice. Registration and More Information: If you are interested in having your child participate in this program, please review and complete the linked student packet forms (in your HOMEROOM teacher’s google classroom) and return them to Mr. McNaughton, the office at Ray, or email them to [email protected] by Friday, April 23, 2021. There also will be physical copies available at Ray. Any questions, please email [email protected]." Our other after school program is a free music clinic, and below is a description of it: "Free Music Clinics for CPS StudentsWe are pleased to announce and respond to the feedback from our music festivals survey sent in December 2020 by offering instrument and voice-specific clinics for the 20-21 school year! The clinics will encourage students to play individually at home, meet other musicians from across the city, and receive instrument-specific information live in Google Meets. The participating colleges and organizations are as follows: Jazz Institute of Chicago, Northeastern Illinois University, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Northern Illinois University, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Chicago Symphony Chorus. There are six different session dates and over 25 clinics specific to ensemble type, instrument, vocal part, and other musical areas of interest (conducting, jazz, etc.) for FREE for you and your students. These clinics are available for students in grades 4-12 from ANY CPS school (elementary, charter, high school, contract, options). The clinicians are aware of the wide range of ability levels across CPS. They will make the session applicable to any group. To view the complete calendar of offered clinics, please view the Music Festivals Clinic Schedule here. To learn more about each offered clinic, please view the Music Festivals Clinic Information document. (Please note that we are still receiving information, and we will update this on a rolling basis). The first session started this past Saturday. Please share the registration form with your students. Teachers or a Parent/Guardian may register students on their behalf, or students may register themselves via this form. There are various types of sessions and dates/times available. Please select all sessions that the student/you are interested in attending. If interested, students can participate in multiple clinics. You will receive an invitation with the GoogleMeet link to the virtual session(s) 24 hours before the event. Sessions will be available for registration up to 24 hours before the event. Please contact [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to offering this new opportunity to you through the music festivals program within the Department of Arts Education. " Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you! 😊

4/16/2021 0 Comments quarter four scheduleGood afternoon Ray families, students, and staff! First, I hope that everyone is doing well and is enjoying their weekend! This is Señorita Dent once again to let you know the minor changes in the Spanish, as well as to give you the GoogleMeet links again. The GoogleMeet links have not changed for my K-5 classes, I just created new links for Ms. Havnoonian's 8th-grade class and for Ms. Johnson-Finner's 8th-grade class. The links are below. The only changes to the Spanish schedule are that I am only seeing Ms. Schuch's Room 214 class only on Mondays from 1:45 - 2:45 PM (1:55 PM - 2:40 PM for the remote students) and am no longer seeing them on Tuesdays. I am no longer seeing Ms. Garcia's 3/4 Room 202 Split Class on Fridays from 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM, I am only seeing them on Thursdays at that time. I am no longer seeing Ms. Maltz's Room Kindergarten Room 101 class on Thursdays, I am only seeing them from 12:45 - 1:45 PM (12:55 - 1:40 PM for the remote students) on Fridays. I am no longer seeing the students in Mr. Paranjape's 8th-Grade Room 301 class, and I wish them the best in high school and beyond! I am instead seeing Ms. Havnoonians 8th-Grade Room 302 class from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM (9:10 AM - 10:55 AM for the remote students) on Tuesdays only. I am also seeing Ms. Johnson-Finner's 8th-Grade class remotely only from 9:00 AM - 10:00 AM on Fridays. This link will never change. If your student has trouble joining the meet then please have them try again a few minutes later once I have turned on the "Quick Access feature." I am so excited to see more students in person starting on Monday and please let me know if there is ever anything I can do to help. My email is [email protected]. Please enjoy your long weekend and stay safe! GoogleMeet Link for Ms. Erickson's A & Dr. James' 1 5th Grade Remote Students - https://meet.google.com/bjs-avzu-wai

Below is the schedule for Spanish class for the K-8 students. I will unfortunately not be seeing every class but just know that I am thinking of you and can't wait to have everyone back in class again as soon as we can! Remote students will log on to the GoogleMeets below (according to their homeroom teacher) at the same time their in-person classmates will be getting picked up by me. So for example, I will pick up Ms. Erickson's 5th grade in-person students at 10:00 AM on Mondays and Thursdays, and at 10:10 AM Dr. James' remote students will get on the GoogleMeet as well. They will get a chance to say hello to their in-person classmates at the beginning of class. The first 15 minutes of class every day for every grade will be dedicated to getting from their homeroom to the Spanish room, finding their seats, sanitizing their desks, and getting out their supplies. The middle 30-40 minutes of class will be dedicated to hybrid learning, and the final 10-15 minutes of class will be dedicated to packing up, sanitizing their desks and chairs, and walking from their Spanish classroom to their homeroom classroom. During this time the remote students may log off and end Spanish class. If you have any other questions then please email me at [email protected]. I am behind on emails since I spent all of last week preparing my classroom, but my goal this week is to get caught up on them so please be patient with me. This is a new way of learning for everyone, so just like I have been and will be patient with each student and their families, I kindly ask for that same patience in return. Getting the technology together and getting into a routine will take some time but it will be worth it in the long run and we will be stronger and better off for it. Below is a picture of the schedule with Wednesdays being a planning and meeting day for the Specials team. The GoogleMeet links are below as well. If you like, you could include a line or two about the person you got the recipe from, if it is a family recipe. LaWanda will compile the recipes and share them with the community at the end of the month.
1/4/2021 0 Comments ¡Feliz año nuevo!Buenos días familias,
Happy New Year, my name is Señorita Dent and I am the new Spanish teacher! I sent you an email before school started in August introducing myself and I am so excited to finally have the 7th and 8th grade students in class beginning today, Monday, January 4th, 2021. Below is information on when each homeroom has Spanish class as well as the GoogleMeet links and GoogleClassroom links for each class. I will see each homeroom class live for 30 minutes each week and they will be assigned a mini project every Monday and are expected to complete it by the following Monday. I will post a video explaining the assignment along with written instructions on their Spanish GoogleClassroom each Monday morning. If the students have any questions or want to set up a time for virtual office hours then they may email me at [email protected] anytime. Students are expected to attend Spanish class every day, and not doing so will result in a loss in participation points, which makes up the largest portion of their grade. If they will miss class or be late due to an excused absence then I expect an email from the student and/or guardian before class. Homeroom 302 will have Spanish class from 1:10 PM - 1:40 PM every Monday. Homeroom 304 will have Spanish class from 1:10 PM - 1:40 PM every Tuesday. Homeroom 306 will have Spanish class from 1:10 PM - 1:40 PM every Wednesday. Homeroom 307 will have Spanish class from 1:10 PM - 1:40 PM every Thursday. Homeroom 309 will have Spanish class from 1:10 PM - 1:40 PM every Friday. Homeroom 302
Please let me know if you have any questions and I look forward to virtually seeing the 7th and 8th-grade students soon! Sincerely, Señorita Dent 11/22/2020 0 Comments Thanksgiving break¡Buenas noches familias!
As Thanksgiving Break approaches, I wanted to remind everyone of a few things. First, there are no classes on Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday this week, so take the time to safely enjoying time with your loved ones. Second, please remember to be kind to yourself if this time of year is difficult for you because of the loss of a family member, the loss of a friend, or even a not-so-pleasant home life. Remember, I'm always here to talk, and within the next few days I will add another page to this website for Social and Emotional Health that contains resources for whenever you're feeling sad, depressed, lonely, scared, sick, stressed, angry, or anything else. Ms. Nieto is also a wonderful resource that is very local as well. Third, our wonderful PE teachers, Mr. McNaughton and Ms. Jerris, have been so wonderful and organized a virtual Turkey Trot for everyone at Ray! All you need to do is go for a walk, jog, or run for any distance between November 25th and November 29th. The homeroom class with the most distance wins a prize! 😁 Click here for more information. Fourth, remember to take care of your emotional and physical health over break by taking time everyday to play outside, get some fresh air, and do something that you enjoy. Stay safe and taking a walk after your large Thanksgiving dinner will help prevent a bad stomach ache as well 😊 ¡Muchas gracias y buen Día de acción de gracias! 🦃 11/16/2020 0 Comments Parent teacher conferences¡Buenos dias todxs!
Quarter two began last week on November 9th, and we also switched Specials classes. I now have 5th and 6th grade in my Spanish class and I'm loving working with everyone! During our five weeks together we will be learning about Bolivia and focusing on the music and dances from there. On Wednesday, November 18th, students do not have classes as we have Parent-Teacher Conferences. If you would like to set up a meeting with me, please send me an email at [email protected] so we may work out a time slot. I will have availability from 10 AM - 11 AM at this link here - meet.google.com/vxc-fqzx-dza I will have availability from 12 PM - 1 PM at this link here - meet.google.com/azk-euow-xjk I will have availability from 2 PM - 3 PM at this link here - meet.google.com/qge-emez-rts Once you join the GoogleMeet you will say with which teacher you want to meet and then Ms. Walker will put you and me in a Breakout room for our meeting. Please let me know if you have any questions, ¡gracias! 😊 ¡Buenos días familias! I know it's a bit early but ¡Feliz Día de los Muertos/Día de los Difuntos! Below are some fun things we're doing at Ray to celebrate and we would love it if each student and their families participated 😊 First, Ms. Nieto created a virtual altar in which families can add a photo of a deceased loved one to honor and remember them. The link to that is here - https://forms.gle/YPQp9BFZSdU3UMXq5 Ms. Nieto also created a Flipgrid in which students and their families can upload a short video of them speaking about a deceased loved one and good memories they have with/of that person. They may speak about multiple people in one video if they would like. The link to the Flipgrid is here - https://flipgrid.com/be20e5ef Third, if a student and/or their family (parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.) came from a country in Latin America and still celebrate Día de los Muertos here in the United States, they may film and email a video of them describing from which country/countries in Latin America their family is, how they celebrate Día de los Muertos, and anything else they want to add. Please send the videos to me at [email protected] or on GoogleClassroom. For example, you and your family could say something like, "Hi, my name is...and this is my family! My parents are from the United States of America, but my mom's parents are from Bolivia and Mexico. We celebrate Día de los Muertos by....which is what my grandpa did in Bolivia. My grandma, who is from Mexico, celebrates Día de los Muertos by doing..." Finally, here is a link to a GoogleSlides presentation in English that has a ton of information and resources about Día de los Muertos in Latin America. I did not make this, it was sent to me from Ms. McGehee, who found it in a facebook group. We reviewed most of the presentation in class on Thursday and Friday. Link Here. Below is a video I recorded of myself reviewing the presentation with some commentary if you would like to take a look at it. I hope that everyone has an enjoyable weekend celebrating Día de los Muertos and Halloween! 😊 10/13/2020 0 Comments Open House¡Buenas tardes!

Below is a list of all the assignments for each grade, and a detailed description of each assignment is on their Spanish GoogleClassroom. These are NOT their final grades so even though that this week is the final week of this semester that they will have Spanish, they may still submit any missing assignment(s) for the following 5 weeks.
