9/20/2020 0 Comments New spanish schedule¡Buenas noches familias!
Since the 1/2 Split class with the two second grade classes is a large class, I have worked with the homeroom teachers, the Specials team lead, and Ms. Neely to create a schedule that will decrease the class size to make Spanish class more accessible and interactive for every student. Starting on Monday, September 21st, the second grade classes and the 1/2 split class will have a different schedule for the next 3 weeks until we switch Specials classes, at which point you will be seeing Ms. Walker for music class. Below is a visual of the new schedule, but here's a typed out version. Starting tomorrow, Monday, I will see Ms. Sheridan's 1/2 Split class during our normal Spanish time for class. So Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM I will see Ms. Sheridan's 1/2 Split class at the same time as usual. The two second grade classes, so Ms. Schuch's and Ms. Sweeney's second grade classes will watch a pre-recorded lesson and complete a quick assignment on GoogleClassroom so I know that the students watched the lesson in full. Ms. Schuch's and Ms. Sweeney's classes will see me virtually for a live class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, while Ms. Sheridan's 1/2 Split class will watch a pre-recorded lesson and complete a quick assignment on GoogleClassroom so I know that they watched the lesson in full. The classes will switch off who I see on Fridays, so for this first Friday I will see Ms. Sheridan's 1/2 Split class for a live lesson while the second grade classes will watch a pre-recorded lesson and complete a GoogleClassroom assignment. I will explain this in class on Monday and Tuesday. So if your student is in Ms. Schuch's or Ms. Sweeney's class then they will watch a pre-recorded lesson and complete a GoogleClassroom assignment from 10:30 AM - 11:00 AM. Please feel free to contact me via email at [email protected] or your child's homeroom teacher if you have any questions. Thank you and I hope that you all had an enjoyable weekend 😁

9/14/2020 0 Comments Why 90% Spanish is necessaryGood morning! I hope that everyone had an enjoyable weekend :) Parents, please read - I have had several parents express their concerns over their student struggling to understand me when I speak Spanish since they have a low level of Spanish themselves. I recorded this video to explain why I plan on using a lot more Spanish in my classes from here on out, both in when I speak and in leaving my slides in Spanish. This is meant to be a kind way to explain that it is not only okay for your students to be struggling to understand the Spanish, but expected. I have also included links to podcasts, videos, and websites that show the research and that using 90% or more of the Target Language (Spanish in this case) is the new norm. There is no need to read or watch or listen to any of this, only if you want more information on as to why I will be using 90% Spanish in my classes and to know the exact research from the researchers themselves. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or concerns as I'm always happy to help in any way I can, but I also want to ensure the students are getting the best education they can using the most up-to-date research. ¡Muchísimas gracias! :) Students - Please feel free to watch this video as well if you would like :)
Use of Target Language in Language Learning - An article written by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, which is the overarching organization for language teaching and learning. They created the language standards I use in my class and contain all the most recent and up-to-date research on language acquisition, teaching, and learning.
How to Help and Support Your Students In a 90% TL Classroom - An article from a veteran language teacher explaining why 90% TL is important and what both the students and myself as the teacher can do to support each other. When is it Appropriate to Use the L1 in the Classroom? - Bill VanPatten is one of the most famous and well-known Language Acquisition researchers, as well as a former Spanish educator. He has two podcasts, Tea with BVP and Talkin' L2 with BVP, in which he discussed a different topic every week pertaining to language acquisition, research, teaching, and learning. This episode is about when it's appropriate to use the L1, English in our case, in the classroom. Each episode is about an hour long. With Alison Mackey: What's the Relationship Between SLA Research and Language Teaching? - A Tea with BVP episode about how Second Language Acquisition research influences language teaching with another famous language acquisition researcher. Does Explicit Language Teaching do Anything? - Another Tea with BVP podcast episode about how teaching students verb charts and memorizing vocabulary won't help them in acquiring a language. Top Myths about Language Acquisition and Language Teaching - Another Tea with BVP episode debunking the myths about language teaching, including how language was taught for so many years and is probably how every parent or guardian learned a language when they were in school. Differences between L1 & L2 Acquisition - Another Tea with BVP episode that explains the differences in how a person acquires a first language as a baby/toddler and how someone acquires a second/third/fourth/etc. language. Vocabulary and Grammar Acquisition - Another Tea with BVP episode that explains how students acquire vocabulary and grammar and how traditional methods that everyone knows don't work. Language as Subject Matter - Another Tea with BVP episode that explains how a language classroom is very different from a subject such as math, science, history, and others. 9/9/2020 0 Comments Googlemeet links ¡Buenos días!
